Rut or routine?

How do normal ppl fall into a routine without feeling stuck? Like, how does anyone do the same thing day in and day out, week after week, and not feel trapped? What is the secret ingredient that I've always missed in my routines that turned them into ruts? Is it a perspective thing only, or is it something else? Will my depression continually block my ability to stay out of ruts or am I gonna just keep getting stuck forever? What is it that's missing for me?
